What is the world UP TO ????

Lovers of the English language might enjoy this. It is yet another example of why people learning English have trouble with the language. Learning the nuances of English makes it a difficult language. (But then, that's probably true of many languages.)

There is a two-letter word in English that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is 'UP.'

It is listed in the dictionary as being used as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v].

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?
At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends and we use ! it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car.
At other times the little word has a real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is choked UP.

We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.We seem to be pretty mixed UPabout UP !

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP , look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP . When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets UP the earth. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on & on, but I'll wrap it UP , for now........ my time is UP, so time to shut UP!

Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, who staged the world's first underwater cabinet meeting at the weekend, is emerging as the global stuntman in the battle against climate change.
Nasheed, 42, dived with his cabinet to the sea bottom Saturday in an effort to press December's U.N. summit in Copenhagen to cap carbon emissions that cause global warming, threatening low-lying nations such as the Maldives.

"We should come out of Copenhagen with a deal that will ensure that everyone will survive," said the president as he bobbed in the shimmering Indian Ocean after the meeting.

A presidential aide said the event, to highlight the threat facing the resort paradise -- which scientists warn could be submerged by rising sea levels by the century's end, was Nasheed's idea.

He said a New York-based environmental group had wanted the president to hold a banner underwater to push for cuts in global greenhouse gas emissions.

But Nasheed, the youngest leader in South Asia, went one better, with the 30-minute meeting intended to highlight a potentially watery future for the 1,192 coral islands that make up the Maldives.

It was only the latest in a series of eye-catching public relations moves by Nasheed, a former journalist, to focus the spotlight on climate change and how it could affect the archipelago, known as an idyllic getaway for the rich.

The president stunned the world last year when he announced he wanted to buy a new homeland to relocate the population of the Maldives in the event that damage from rising sea levels became too great.

The announcement had a major impact in India, Sri Lanka and Australia -- all potential destinations cited by Nasheed for what could be some of the world's first environmental refugees.

Nasheed has also been photographed at a submerged desk off the sandy white beaches of the Maldives.

The environmental activism of Nasheed, who came to power last year, follows efforts by his predecessor, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, to highlight the nation's predicament.(AFP)

98 base jumpers take part in 400m plunge off Malaysian tower

Plummeting through the air off the top of a 421m tower is not everyone's idea of fun, but for these base jumpers it was an experience of a lifetime.

Some 98 of the extreme sports enthusiasts took part in the 2009 International Tower jump in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, today.

The structure was built in 1995 for communication purposes and is currently the fifth tallest freestanding tower in the world.

Saved by the 'chute: A jumper floats down back to earth

Professionals from 18 countries gathered for the opportunity to hurl themselves into the sky before parachuting down to earth during the event.

Base jumping started in the 1980s after several sky jumpers modified their equipment for an increased thrill.

Free falling: With their arms and legs spread these two jumpers are enjoying a pure rush of adrenalin

The sport involves wearing a parachute and jumping from fixed objects – with the word 'base' standing for the four categories of surfaces from which you can jump: buildings, antennas, spans (bridges) and earth (i.e. cliffs).

The first base jump in Malaysia was held in 1999 and the annual event continues to draw huge crowds and increasing numbers of participants.

A woman who lived in Germany during world war two wanted to cross the German/Swiss border in order to escape nazi pursuers.

The bridge which she is to cross is a half mile across, over a large canyon. Every three minutes a guard comes out of his bunker and checks if anyone is on the bridge.

If a person is caught trying to escape German side to the Swiss side they are shot. If caught crossing the other direction without papers they are sent back. She knows that it takes at least five minutes to cross the bridge, in which time the guard will see her crossing and shoot her.

How does she get across?

ANSWER :

She waits until the guard goes inside his hut, and begins to walk across the bridge. She gets a little more than half way, turns around, and begins to walk toward the german side once more. The guard comes out, sees that she has no papers, and sends her back to the swiss side.

Italian Garlic Bread - Magnifico!

The History Behind The Lost Garlic Bread Recipe.

Maria and Antonio Gaetani lived near Castellammare del Golfo in Sicily. Antonio was a part-time orchardist and full time fisherman. Maria was, it is reputed, the best cook anyone could ever remember. Her specialty was seafood with ample garlic and her cannoli (made with sheep's milk ricotta) and garlic bread, especially the bread. Maria could not read nor write, everything was a pinch of this and a bit of that type of recipe, but it was magnificent to the taste.

Sometimes when making her garlic bread she would use olive oil instead of butter - both ways it was delicious. One thing she never wavered from was using the juice of the garlic clove and not the pulp of the garlic clove. Garlic juice and warm butter is the only way to get the garlic flavor deep into the bread so that the bread has a total garlic flavor - this cannot happen with garlic cloves because the pulp does not soak into the bread. Maria never revealed her recipe, never wrote it down, but her son, Raffaele did because he loved the bread so. His granddaughter found the recipe among his things in his home in northern Italy near Milano in 2001. We offer it to you here because, like Maria, we think that the best garlic bread is made with the juice.

Ingredients:

French bread or sourdough loaf, cut in half lengthwise in 6-inch sections.

Garlic Valley Farms Garlic Juice

Butter

THE CASTELLAMMARE DEL GOLFO METHOD

Melt butter and mix in equal amount of garlic juice with melted butter.

Lightly toast bread.

Spread melted butter-garlic juice combination on bread.

Again, lightly toast until butter & garlic juice combination are slightly bubbly.

Serve warm.

P.S. Don't forget to add garlic juice to your pasta sauce, too.

ALTERNATE METHOD

Spray bread with garlic juice and toast lightly.

Remove from oven, spray again with garlic juice and then spread on the butter.

Toast the bread lightly again until the butter and juice melts and enters the bread.

Serve warm.

Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake

Description

Raspberry and chocolate are a perfect pairing. Try this easy cheesecake recipe for a delicious treat that the whole family will enjoy. Garnish this cheesecake with mint leaves, whipped cream and fresh raspberries.

Cooking Time: 1 hr 20 min

Ingredients

1 ¹/2 cup crushed chocolate sandwich cookies
2 tablespoon margarine, melted
4 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened, divided
1 ¹/4 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 package (6 ounces) chocolate chips, melted and cooled
¹/3 cup seedless raspberry preserves
6 ounce package chocolate chips
¹/4 cup whipping cream

Instructions

Combine crumbs and margarine, press onto bottom of 9-inch springform pan.
Combine 3 packages cream cheese and the sugar, mixing at medium speed until well blended. Add eggs slowly. Blend in sour cream and vanilla, pour over crust.
Combine remaining cream cheese and the melted chocolate, mixing at medium speed on electric mixer until well blended. Add preserves, mix well. Drop rounded tablespoons of chocolate cream cheese batter over plain batter, do not swirl.
Bake at 325 degrees F for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Loosen cake from rim of pan.
Melt chocolate chips and whipping cream over low heat, stirring until smooth. Spread over cheesecake. Chill.
